Modern Warrior - Shock Wave Review

Once again in reviewing my Facebook page this product came across listed as "The #1 selling Pre Workokout on Amazon.  Of course in seeing this I had to investigate this further.

At first glance you can see this is a concetrate with a total weight of of 7 grams per serving. Little ligh for a Pre Workout in my opinion. Key word opinion.

Let's look at the Pro Energy Complex - 400 mgs with the brunt of it being 2 different types of caffeine. I will option to say this is most likely in the 300-325. Not light nor heavy by any means.

What baffles me a little is the Pro Pump Complex of 2375 mgs with the brunt being 2 forms of creatine, HCL and monohydrate. If you looked at my previous reviews, HCL is typically dosed at 1-3 gms (1000-3000 mgs) and creatine monohydrate being studied  at between 3-5 gms (3000-5000 mgs)  If we add the lower dosages we are already at 4000 mgs (1000 mgs HCL + 3000 mgs Monohydrate).

Anyone else seeing the discrepency? Again all 5 of Shock Wave's ingredients = 2375 and I have not even factored Glycerol Monostereate which I generally see dosed anywhere from 500 mgs and some as high as 1500 mgs.

I did question this to one of MW's employees to which he responded "How many companies study the synergy between multiple ingredients that do essentially the same job". Great response as I understand synergistic effects of things where A+B can super charge the final product BUT I am almost guarantee that they are not doing "clinical trials" or even well defined user groups to effectively backup his statement.

In closing, will I be using this product? Surely not but as previously stated, I am all for people making money but is in a deceptive tactic that I have issues with.

Continued success and as always, thanks for reading.

Apocalypse Labz - Feral Pre

*** Disclaimer - I have not tried this product and have no affiliation nor do I know anyone from Apocalypse Labs*****

I stumbled across this company viewing them on a friends Facebook feed. When I first looked at the ingredient panel, I was turned off and figured it was time to break down this Prop Blended Pre.

Flavors - sour watermelon gummy, cherry bomb colada and sour cotton candy..all sounding great. I love companies that have unique flavors.

Lets quickly view the ingredients:

Performance Blend - 3755 mgs which is made up of Beta Alanine, Creatine HCL, Betaine Anhydrous and Agmatine Sulfate;all great ingredients to have in a Pre Workout Right? Of course but only when they are properly dosed. Lets analyze

Beta Alanine is a modified version of Alanine and has been shown to increase muscular endurance, hence it's usage in many supplements today. There are varying reports out there with some suggesting an optimal dosage being anywhere from 2000 mgs on the low end and some as high as 5000 mgs. Users sometimes suggest that if they do not get the "tingles" known as "parathesia", that the product is not working. Not always the case.

Creatine HCL - is made by adding an HCL bond. It is suggested that less is needed and by adding the HCL bond, there is less bloating and there is no loading phase. Not much research has been done on the HCL version where monohydrate has been around for over 20 yrs (thank you Bill Philips of EAS) and is one of the only suppements that has a tremendous amount of studies/data on it. Current data on HCL supplementation varies anywhere between 1- 3 gms.

Betaine Anhydrous also known as TMG is a pretty neat supplement as it has been shown to increase muscle strength, muscle growth as well as endurance.. Studies have shown intake of 1-1.5 gms 2x a day is best.

Agmatine Sulfate - is a derivitive of the metabolite L Arginine which is touted as something to increase pump. It has been added to many products with dosages extremely low at 250 mgs with more robust dosages of 1000 mgs ++

According to the panel, all of this adds up to  3755 mgs. Lets do some quick math adding values on the low end of what research and studies have provided.

Beta Alanine (2000 mgs) + Creatine HCL (1000 mgs) + Betaine Anhydrous (1000 mgs) + Agmatine Sulfate (250 mgs) = 4250 mgs........500 mgs less then the 3755 mgs.listed on the ingredient panel.

If real efficacious dosages were used, we would be over 7000 mgs. Sadly enough I haven't even tackled the Energy Focus Blend in fears of what I might find.

Again I am not trying to be malicious towards this company. I am all about the freedom to make money but when you expect the best from a product you are paying hard earned money with.....this I have a problem with. At the end of the day, if you are happy with the results and think you are getting the best then who am I to suggest elsewise.

As always thank you for allowing me a few minutes of your time.

VMI Sports - K-XR Review

As mentioned in my last post, I will be randomly picking products and breaking them down.
*** Disclaimer - This is a product I have not used as of yet. My review will be based only on data**

So I have heard/seen VMI products floating around for a few years now and finally decided to click on their site to learn more.  https://www.vmisports.com/ Since PreWorkouts (PWO) seem to be one of the most popular categories I wanted to give this a view.

Product - VMI Sports -K- XR - Preworkout - promotes Energy, Pump and Focus

Flavors - Appears to have a nice line up both "safe"; TropicalPunch and Blueberry Razz as well as a few "out of the box", which I appreciate, in that being Cotton Candy, Miami Vice, Cherry Italian Ice and Patriot Pop.

Ingredient Panel - seeing that it is a Prop Blend - I will do my best to assume dosages

*Intense Pump Blend- 3300 mgs
Beta Alanine - recommended dosages are as much as 3200 mgs in a day. Notice the underline. Many people feel that if your skin is not tingling/crawling that the product is not working. Actually on the contrary. My best guess is that you will be feeling the Beta Alanine tingles.

Taurine - is an amino acid shown to improve mental and athletic performance.

Theobormine - is a vaso -dialator

Maximum Energy Blend- 632.5 mgs
Here is where I am a little confused, with this taken right off the website
“400mg caffeine split between fast acting and slow release forms for endless energy”…why not just add this right to the ingredient panel?

Norcoclaurine/Higenamine - this is somewhat prevalent in PWO and Weight Loss products, basically a mild stimulant with dosages anywhere between 20-75 mgs.

Rauwolfia Vomitaria Extract also sometimes known as Alpha Yohimbine is an herb that is generally put in PWO's and Weight Loss products I have seen dosages as low as 3 mgs and depending on the potency/purity can sometimes go up to as much as 50 mgs.

Focal & Cognitive Enhancing Blend- 503 mgs

Choline Bitartrate - is a molecule that increase cognitive/mental alertness. I have typically seen dosages between 250-500 mgs

Huperzia Serrate - comes from a plant that is suggested to increase memory. Dosages seen are anywhere between 50-200mcg.

Overall Review - as mentioned in the beginning of the article, I have not physically tasted/tested this product. It is classified by VMI as a PWO but does seem to walk a little of a line in being possibly a Thermogenic as well.  Although it is a prop blend, I do not see anything under dosed and do respect them for at at least offering the caffeine content, although I would like to see this on the bottle.

Would love to hear from you if you have in fact tried the product. Appreciate your time and thanks for reading.

Coming Soon - Breaking Down Supplements

As you know, I am very passionate about the supplement industry, bringing over 20 yrs of experience. My very first supplements were Twin Labs Heavyweight Gainer 2500 and Amino Acid Tablets that were huge.

Just like SuppTalk Radio, where I audibly shed light on companies, I will also be turning to this forum to uncover the good and bad of randomly chosen products. Some I will have personally used and others I will break down based on ingredient panels alone.

As always I look forward to your interaction. supptalk1@gmail.com

Are you really getting enough food?

I always consider myself a clean eater, for the most part and also work my ass off in the gym. I would like to think I am growing but not leaning out the way I want to.

I finally decided to download one of those food intake trackers...Spark People was my choice..it was free in the Android Store as I am sure you can get it on Itunes as well.

Boy was I thrown for a loop. Some days I was barely eating 1500 calories, mind you I never got hungry and other days  would eat 2000-2500....good intake right!? But certain days I was eating 70%+ of carbs.....daaamn!

I am now on a higher protein, medium carb and lower fat diet, eating very clean but do splurge on a Saturday or Sunday. Gotta have my pizza and Ice Cream.

Yes inputting data and weighing food may be cumbersome but give it a try, you may be surprised by what you see and learn.

I can't lose weight

So often I see the Question – I cannot lose weight….help!!!

I always follow up with – “Tell me about your current eating habits”? Notice how I use the term “eating habits”. I personally hate the term diet. Many people see this as a negative word that means I cannot have deserts, pizza etc.

 Answers generally are the following

1. Oatmeal, egg whites, chicken breasts, salads, steamed vegetables rice…etc…..you get the gist. But what they neglect to realize is how much of each. You can eat the healthiest foods in the world but if you are eating too much, you will never get to where you want to be. Start measuring/weighing your feed. It’s not hard and food scales are quite inexpensive starting at around $10 on sites like Amazon.

 2. I use a food tracker or calorie counter app and I am eating 1000 cals a day. Unfortunately, when calories are too low this also has a negative impact. Your body goes into starvation mode thus storing food, not sure when the next meal will be coming. Unfortunately losing weight is somewhat of a science BUT it does not have to be difficult.

In order to lose 1 pound of bodyweight, not muscle, not fat, BODYWEIGHT you need to burn/expend/utilize 3500 calories more than you eat. Breakdown: Eating 500 calories less per day X 7 days in a week = -3500 calories = 1 pound lost

Eating 1000 calories less per day x 7 = -7000 calories = 2 pounds lost.
I personally do not recommend losing any more than 2 pounds per week unless you are morbidly obese and or instructed by a Dr.
Google search “How many calories I should eat and weight loss”. Pick a number and after 2 weeks if you are not seeing any results, try taking in 100 calories less per day or 700 calories per week.

Suggestion – Do not get fixated on a scale. There are so many intangibles when using a scale whether it is the time of day, placement of the scale, clothes etc. If you have to use a scale, use it every 2-4 weeks, same time of the day, same clothes or lack of.

Better Suggestion Pick out a snug pair of pants/shirt, belt etc…..how great does it feel when you no longer need to lie flat on the bed to zip up your pants??!

Good luck and if I can answer any questions or lend assistance feel free to email me at shawn@supptalk.com Continued success.

Review of Perform Kinetics by ATP

Wanted to quickly share with you a review of a brand new company/product ATP Nutrition (Aspire, Train, Perform), www.aspiretrainperform.com Perform Kinetics which is their first product in their line, touted as a Pre Workout.

Their Claims:

        Clinically Dosed
100% Complete Label Transparency
Created on Data backed ingredients that work

Few great reasons which got me excited about trying the product.

With many new PWO’s on the market, it is always a gamble with me personally, over-stimmed, underdosed and sometimes the dreaded “crash” that ensues shortly after usage.

As you see from the labels below, it is a pretty robust formula, caffeine for energy, pump ingredients and lactic acid buffers as well as nootropics to help keep one mentally focused.

Dosage:
I was afforded both sample packets as well as a full bottle/jug. At the risk of opening and not liking a full bottle I decided to try a sample packet which is one full dosage.

Mixability:
Approximately 20 ozs of water in a shaker bottle using a wire whisk ball. Few quick shakes and all was great. No sediment/granules.

Taste:
Cherry Limeade was flavor. First off, glad to see a new/different flavor out there. I enjoy the Fruit Punches and Blue Raspberry but my flavor palate is asking for something new and exciting and this was it. To be honest, not sure I really tasted the cherry as it was more in the limeade. Slightly tart but refreshing and enjoyable.

Efficacy:
Trial 1 – I sipped this over perhaps a 5-10 minutes (first thing in my stomach for the day) and probably 10-15 minutes later felt the nootropics hitting. As mentioned earlier, I consider myself somewhat stim sensitive, I personally try to keep myself this way. The 250 mgs of both caffeine anhydrous and di-caffeine malate definitely had my heart racing but nothing to the point of feeling like a heart attack or that my head was going to explode

I started with A 20 minute cardio/treadmill session, 4.0 mph. This is where the fun began. Although this is touted as a Pre Workout, Perform Kinetics had me sweating hard at the 10-minute mark and upon completion, shirt was sticking to me nicely.
Workout – Back and Calves….throughout the workout, had a good euphoria. Weights moved very nicely and I felt energized to get to my next set with less wait time. Success.

Trial 2 – same as protocol one, sipped over 5-10 minutes but this time around, heart did not race like it did the first time. Cardio session was great and leg workout went quite smoothly.

Pro’s:
·         Clinically dosed based on true studies
·         Fully disclosed label- YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING
·         Although I have only tried the one flavor thus far – liked it a lot. Looking forward to trying the other flavors (Strawberry Kiwi and Wildberry Punch)
·         Even after working out, still had a great alert feeling for a few more hours and no crash.

Con’s:
·         Nothing to report after 2 uses

Summary
I definitely would recommend the product to individuals looking for a good PWO/possible thermo powder, mid point stim and again, have to respect any company going the route of a fully disclosed label.
If interested in trying this product visitit http://www.aspiretrainperform.com and enter code supptalk15 to save 15% on your order. Continued success ATP…will be following intently.
